COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — A group of students at the University of South Carolina called the ‘USC 2020’ walked out of class Monday joining a growing national list of college students protesting about treatment of minorities. The 2020 group assembled outside Longstreet Theater and walked across campus to the Osborne Administration Building on USC’s campus to voice their concerns. “I want people of color like me to be able to access the University,” said Senior Aaron Greene. Their petition makes a list of demands to university President Harris Pastides including a request to expand and improve minority recruitment efforts and launch an independent investigation of several administrators. “Some of the administration we feel like haven’t been properly trained for handling a diverse campus, we feel like they need more training,” said Nona Henderson. University of South Carolina officials said they are working with students to turn dialogue into action. “It will take time and efforts like this where we are in open dialogue with one another to make the positive changes to make sure that every single one of us feels like we’re included, that we are engaged, that we belong and that we are valued,” said Chief Diversity Officer, Dr. John Dozier. The two parties agreed to schedule a Town Hall style meeting in the near future.
