To win last year’s competition Osborne says, “It took grit. It took pure grit. I mean you spend months preparing for this competition and your cards, putting them all on the table here. So it’s just grit at that point that’s going to get you through each individual day, each event.”
“So it’s burned in your brain. And then what’s burned in my brain is my last conversation with him as well. So you know those kinds of things hit ya — and it’s hard to forget,” Yamashiro says.
She encourages everyone to not be afraid in asking someone if they’re having suicidal thoughts. “We care for the people that we’re asking that question to. So it can be a little intimidating or unsure of what to do afterwards, and the biggest thing you can do is listen, give them support, help that person know they’re not alone, and connect that person to care,” Barnes says.
“If you have a Veteran not thriving due to a mental health issue, that is a priority. If you have a veteran not thriving because they don’t have a good job, that’s a priority. So the issue is not about specifics, it’s about outcomes. And the outcome we’re trying to achieve for South Carolina Veterans is to help them be in a position where they can thrive in this state,” says McCaffrey.
“It’s important that people understand that we’re doing things, and we’re trying to. But this idea that we only can do it a certain way — that’s history. If you look at the cities that are progressing forward and moving forward it’s because they’re not doing what’s typically been done,” says Rickenmann.
“We never considered the likelihood as reported to us by the jurors that the Clerk of Court would go into the sanctity of the jury room before he (Murdaugh) testified and tell the jurors, ‘Don’t be fooled by his testimony, watch out for his body language,’ and that is what the sworn testimony that we filed in court today says,” Jordan says.
The theme for this year’s Chapin Labor Day Parade is “Chapin’s Treasures” — which not only brought out hundreds of people to take part in the fun, but in keeping with the theme, plenty of pirates.
“We want everyone to have a fun Labor Day. Enjoy all of the festivities, we’re gonna have beautiful weather this weekend, it’s gonna be a good weekend to be out doing things. But just make sure you’re making smart decisions and not poor decisions,” says Bennett.
