“You get all this energy and vitality that’s going on at Bull Street and you have the wonderful park that really acts like the front yard in front of the school of medicine that our students will be able to enjoy. So, you combine all of those things and it’s kind of hard to imagine a better site,” says Gruner.
“We all know that we’re going to have students that are not going to score at the highest level. That’s life! But we want our students to realize that even though you did not make the top score, that we also look forward to seeing you grow,” says Adams.
“For the seniors of this community and this area, we appreciate it, we love it. We had a wonderful time. Everything was beautiful. We had lots of gifts and good food, and good fellowship!” says McEachern
Sponsored by the Richland Sertoma Club, the event known as “Signing Santa” has been going on for the past 25 years.
Chief Holbrook says the 172,000 square foot, six-story building has adequate space to hold current and future staffing levels for all of their core bureaus.
Through an effort called “Operation Spread the Joy,” inmates from 20 different South Carolina prisons are helping to bring happiness to long term care residents with handmade gifts.
“It can be very difficult, especially around the holidays when everybody is supposed to be happy. You’re coming together, and you’ve got parties you need to go to, people you want to see, and when things change, you don’t want to do it anymore. You just don’t feel like it’s worth it,” Pilat-Renner says.
“They learn through doing, and we see that their motor skills develop so much quicker, their communication skills are enhanced, their partnerships with their friends are enhanced, and they just learn different skills from when they’re inside,” Ironside says.
As part of the SC State Museum’s “Reimagine the Experience” campaign, new upgrades include fully ADA compliant restrooms, two privacy spaces for nursing mothers, and a wellness room for guests with disabilities.
