Thanks to the generosity of the local community on Monday, Dec. 22, the Columbia-Richland Fire Department began distributing food collected during its Firefighters Feeding Families Campaign.
Thanks to the generosity of the local community on Monday, Dec. 22, the Columbia-Richland Fire Department began distributing food collected during its Firefighters Feeding Families Campaign.
This time last year, the food bank served around 83,000 people during this six-week period. This year, that number has skyrocketed to around 148,000 people in that same time frame.
At Harvest Hope on Shop Road and other food banks, South Carolina’s State Guard members are helping direct traffic and distribute food to families in need.
The South Carolina State guard will distribute food from state food banks to assist families affected by the shutdown.
“With SNAP benefits running out, the lines are really long as you can see, people are already getting a sense of panic. And many state agencies are directing people to local food banks like Harvest Hope,” Rowe says, adding, “The need is great. But we cannot step into the place of SNAP. It’s $100 million a month.”
