Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said his company is rebranding itself as Meta in an effort to encompass its virtual-reality vision for the future, what Zuckerberg calls the “metaverse.” Skeptics point out that it also appears to be an attempt to change the subject from the Facebook Papers, a leaked document trove that has revealed the ways Facebook ignored internal reports and warnings of the harms its social network created or magnified across the world.
Details from more than 500 million Facebook users have been found available on a website for hackers. The information appears to be several years old, but it is another example of the vast amount of information collected by Facebook and other social media sites, and the limits to how secure that information is.
Mark Zuckerberg testified virtually before House lawmakers on Thursday, saying Facebook is not responsible the January 6 insurrection at the Capitol. Members of the House Energy and Commerce Committee grilled Zuckerberg and other social media CEO’s for not policing their platforms.
Tuesday in Washington, Senator Lindsey Graham served as the chair of a Senate hearing on the impact of social media companies censoring election posts. The heads of Twitter and Facebook defended their safeguards against disinformation in the presidential election.
