City of Columbia holds 45th Annual Veterans Day Parade
Known as one of the largest in the Southeast, Columbia’s Veterans Day Parade kicked off at the corners of Sumter and Laurel Streets, with Vietnam Veterans serving as this year’s Grand Marshals.

Veterans Day is a federal holiday held every year to honor military veterans of the U.S. Armed Services.
“If you have a Veteran not thriving due to a mental health issue, that is a priority. If you have a veteran not thriving because they don’t have a good job, that’s a priority. So the issue is not about specifics, it’s about outcomes. And the outcome we’re trying to achieve for South Carolina Veterans is to help them be in a position where they can thrive in this state,” says McCaffrey.
“They’re learning something, and the questions they ask are important questions, and if I can answer that and set them on the right path and a good path, it’s just a joy to me,” says Hogue.
The eight week “Summer Student Program” exposes the high school and undergraduate level students to a wide range of services and job opportunities within the healthcare system.
“Everyone of these regardless of background, regardless of race, creed, color, whatever. We are brothers and sisters. We all have served and we all wrote the same check. Some of them got cashed. Mine has yet to be,” Field says.

The countdown to summer is on, which means hotter temperatures, and lots of family fun. But summer can also be a tough time for many local veterans. This Friday, you can cool off on the ice and help give back to our veterans in need through the Columbia Warriors’ Charity Hockey Game.
According to the Fisher House Foundation, Veteran families can stay at one of the homes free of charge while a loved one is in the hospital.
Officials are calling the event the “Veterans Experience Action Center,” and will take place Thursday March 23rd, Friday March 24th, and Saturday March 25th — each day from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
