Army’s top 6 drill sergeants out-tough each other
FORT JACKSON, S.C. (AP) — The Army is looking for a few good drill sergeants.
Six order-barking men and women have been invited to Fort Jackson to compete starting Monday in a week-long best drill sergeant challenge. All have deployed to combat zones such as Iraq, Afghanistan or even Haiti.
Officials say the two female and four male drill sergeants earned a place in the competition by winning local contests at Army installations in Missouri, Oklahoma, South Carolina, and North Carolina,
The drill sergeants will be judged on a punishing round of about 50 events, ranging from physical fitness tests to situations where they instruct soldiers on tasks like throwing grenades or organizing recruit runs while calling the cadence.
One winner from active duty and one from the reserve ranks will be announced Friday.
