Richland County deputies offer free summer camps

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Staying drug-free and away from violence are themes at some free summer camps being offered by Richland County sheriff’s deputies.

Sheriff Leon Lott says summer and sports camps for rising sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth graders start Monday at St. Andrews Middle School.

Sessions for various age groups start July 11 and July 25 at other schools in the area. Each session lasts for two weeks and is open to 45 campers.

Lott says the programs are coordinated with Richland 1, Richland 2 and Lexington-Richland 5 school districts and hope to alleviate summer boredom by offering positive activities and helping kids develop the skills to respect others, avoid gangs and refuse to participate in violence.
