Civil War dead in SC county being honored

MONCKS CORNER, S.C. (AP) — It took 15 years to gather the names and raise the money, but finally a monument to Confederate war dead from South Carolina’s Berkeley County is complete.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reports the monument with 263 names is being unveiled Saturday at Old Santee Canal Park in Moncks Corner.

The effort to raise the monument was headed by a local camp of the Sons of Confederate Veterans.

An official with the group says there are other names that will never be known. If more are found, a second monument may be erected.
