COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — Thanks to the efforts of more than 1,500 volunteers, SC Mission 2011: Midlands, a free health care event held on August 5 and 6 at the Carolina Coliseum, provided health care services to more than 2,000 people. However, not everyone received treatment. While thousands of uninsured and under-insured in the Midlands received dental, medical and eye care services over the two days, because supply did not meet demand, hundreds were turned away, receiving no medical treatment. Event organizers don’t believe the program was faulty, but say they did all they could, considering the tremendous and overwhelming amount of people who showed up. In addition to health care services provided, almost 700 people walked away with a 30-day supply of the prescriptions they needed, which totaled 1,142 over the entire event. The total amount of services provided is valued at more than $500,000.
