Columbia man with gun shot by police

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Authorities say Columbia police officers shot and killed a 21-year-old man who wouldn’t drop the gun he was carrying.

Investigators say officers were called to a Columbia home around 8 p.m. Saturday by the man’s mother. It was the second time that day she called to report he had a weapon.

Authorities say Ajani Mitchell refused to put down the gun and threatened the officers, who fired back.

At the call earlier Saturday, police found a gun, but Mitchell was not around.

The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating the shooting, which is standard when an officer shoots a suspect.
