AG drops probe into SC retirement commission chair

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) âone space€one space” South Carolina’s top prosecutor has dropped a probe into allegations that the chairman of the agency that invests public workers’ pension money benefited from a commission investment in forestland. Deputy Attorney General Allen Myrick said in a letter dated Oct. 8 that state prosecutors declined to pursue the matter further. More than a year ago, state Treasurer Curtis Loftis called for an investigation into allegations that Retirement System Investment Commission chairman Reynolds Williams had profited from his law firm’s work on a forestland investment deal made with the commission. Williams recused himself from the vote concerning the deal. On Wednesday, one of his attorneys said Williams was pleased the matter had been dropped. A spokesman for Loftis said the treasurer was committed to ensuring transparency of the state’s investments. ___ Kinnard can be reached at http://twitter.com/MegKinnardAP
