Voters head to polls for Lexington County sheriff race

LEXINGTON COUNTY, S.C. (WOLO) – Voters in Lexington County are ready to start fresh. It has been decades since they have seen a new face at the head of the sheriff’s department. Polls opened at 7am for local residents to cast their ballots, and they will remain ope for 12 hours until 7pm Tuesday. There are four candidates on the ballot. They include: -Richland County deputy Justin Britt -Assistant Town of Lexington Police Chief Jay Koon -West Columbia Chief of Police Dennis Tyndall -and Criminal Justice instructor Ed Felix. If no one can grab more than 50 percent of the vote, a run-off is set for March 17th. The candidates are looking to fill former Sheriff James Metts seat, after he was indicted last year. He pled guilty to federal bribery charges and is waiting for a sentencing date. Metts was the longest serving sheriff in South Carolina.
