Columbia , S.C. (WOLO) — The deadline to file for the First in the South Primary is Wednesday. On Tuesday, Rand Paul’s wife Kelley filed the paperwork along with candidate Jim Gilmore. “I believe I am competent and capable and have a direction for the United States of America that will serve us well in the White House,” said Gilmore. Two of the last candidates to file before Wednesday‘s deadline, Paul and Gilmore joined 13 other candidates on the ticket. In order to appear on the ballot, candidates are required to not only fill out the necessary paperwork but also submit a $40,000 check. According to South Carolina Republican Party officials the hefty check benefits the election process by helping off-set election costs. “Most of those fees go to the election commission to help pay for the precincts to be open on election day to give every voter a chance to vote,” explained SC GOP Chairman Matt Moore.
