Gov. Haley suspends Dorchester County Coroner Chris Nisbet following indictment

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WCIV) — Gov. Nikki Haley has suspended Dorchester County Coroner Chris Nisbet after he was indicted Thursday on a misconduct in office charge following an armed confrontation with his neighbor. The indictment alleges Nisbet breached his duty for “misusing his office to effect an unlawful arrest on a private citizen against the peace and dignity of this State …” Haley issued an executive order stating her office may suspend anyone indicted for a crime involving moral turpitude until that person is acquitted. State law says the chief magistrate in that county will act as coroner until the coroner is reinstated or a new coroner is elected. Nisbet wasn’t immediately available for comment. He was charged by the State Law Enforcement Division after an Aug. 25th incident in which he chased down his neighbor who allegedly pointed a gun at a repo man. When Summerville police officers arrived, they found Nisbet standing outside of his truck, pointing his gun at the ground. Dash cam video shows it took at least 20 seconds for Nisbet to drop the weapon after repeated commands from officers. Photo courtesy of WCIV
