Fireflies Drop 3 Of 4 At Charleston

fireflies.jpgCHARLESTON, S.C. (Fireflies) — Columbia catcher Pat Mazeika tallied two more hits in Sunday’s 4-3 loss to Charleston at Joseph P. Riley Jr. Park. The lefty was activated off of the Disabled List on May 18, and in five starts, has posted a .471 batting average with four walks. Mazeika’s on-base percentage sits at .591.

Columbia (21-22) fell behind in the bottom of the second inning when Jhalan Jackson homered against Chase Ingram (L, 3-3). The Fireflies starter was then handed a lead in the following half inning. Tyler Moore and Vinny Siena both reached base and Mazeika drove them home with a single. Those were the only runs the visitors  would score off of Charleston (27-15) starter Daris Vargas (W, 4-0).

Ingram was dealing on the mound until the fifth inning. With two outs, the RiverDogs strung together three straight run-scoring singles to take a 4-2 lead. Ingram finished with seven strikeouts in five innings of work.

In the eighth, J.C. Rodriguez drew a walk and Mazeika reached as well right afterword when he was hit by a pitch. A Willie Gabay wild pitch enabled the runners to advance and Milton Ramos’ groundout plated Rodriguez. The Fireflies were back within a run, but that was the closest they’d get.

Not to be forgotten, Craig Missigman and Alex Palsha combined for three scoreless innings of work out of the Columbia bullpen.

The Fireflies begin a three-game series with the Augusta GreenJackets on Monday night at Spirit Communications Park at 7:05 p.m. Columbia lefty P.J. Conlon (6-0, 1.04) squares off with Augusta right-hander Phil Bickford (1-3, 2.92).
