JAMES ISLAND, S.C. (WCIV) — A state agency is investigating a James Island assisted living center after an 80-year-old woman was found dead a day after she walked away.

Marie Duddy’s body was found in a marsh about 7:30 p.m. Saturday, about 28 hours after officials at Savannah Place reported her missing, officials said.

DHEC says this is not the first time the center has been investigated. The most recent prior complaint about Savannah Place was in March 2016.

DHEC spokesman Jim Beasley said the allegations involved the facility being understaffed, a lack of mealtime supervision and a resident injuring another.

Beasley said the agency investigated the complaint and cited the facility for being under-staffed and missing documentation.

Savannah Place sent the agency a plan of correction and it has been accepted, Beasley said.
