CHARLESTON, SC (WOLO)-Along East Bay Street in Charleston restaurants are back open and people are out taking advantage of the beautiful weather today.
You’d certainly never know a massive hurricane blew threw here just days ago.
It’s business as usual in Charleston.
“A lot of trees down, a lot of branches. It was better than I thought it would be.”
The only thing flooding King Street Monday, was shoppers.
“Resilient. It comes back. Through everything.”
Even shops that hadn’t gotten the plywood off their windows…opened their doors.
Charleston’s usual glossy facade…still littered with leaves, sticks and mud, but that couldn’t keep walkers away from the Battery.
Residents we talked to, who chose *not* to evacuate…
“My parents stayed through Hugo, so we were ready to take it on.”
…say they dodged a bullet.
“It didn’t get that bad.”
Just south of Charleston…
“Hurricane Matthew’s whipping winds causing major erosion along South Carolina’s coast, including here at popular Folly Beach.”
“We’ve lost probably most of our renourishment beach from the last couple years.”
The surf had calmed Monday…with debris, sand and water left behind. On East Ashley Avenue, Christy Bickel returned to a bit of roof damage.
“So blessed that neither house was touched and we will be able to get the roof fixed without too much trouble.”
No electricity…the biggest issue facing residents Monday morning. That didn’t stop Folly Beach favorite, Bert’s Market, from serving up hotdogs on the grill. NATS…Bert’s never closes it doors…
“But ultimately, when the storm took a turn, it was going to come closer to us, we decided it was time to get out.”
Matthew has come and gone…
“This is a resilient community and we will come back.”
…and life goes on.
