RCSD: 9 year-old’s shooting death ruled an accident

The Richland County Sheriff's Department says the shooting death of 9 year-old Christopher Scott III was an accident due to two children playing with a gun.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO)—The Richland County Sheriff’s Department says the shooting death of 9 year-old Christopher Scott III was an accident due to two children playing with a gun.

Authorities were first called to a home on Dec. 19 in the 1000 block of Weston Road in Hopkins after deputies received a call of a child being shot.

Deputies say the child was transported to the hospital by his mother and was pulled over en route by authorities.

They transferred the child and his mother to a patrol car and continued to the hospital, where the child was pronounced deceased upon arriving, say officials.

Investigators learned that the 9 year-old and another child were playing with a gun taken from inside the home in a vehicle parked outside.

The gun went off hitting the victim and the other child ran for help, alerting the mother, say authorities.

In a release, Sheriff Lott says, “This is a tragic situation and our hearts are broken for this family. We ask the community to keep them in their thoughts. These kinds of accidents happen in an instant and we plead with parents to please, please make sure that firearms are locked up inside the home.”

Authorities say there will be no charges filed in this incident
