American Dream: Keeping your lawn lush as the May flowers begin to grow
Tyler Ryan gets tips on creating a lush green lawn
COLUMBIA SC (WOLO) – As spring approaches summer, thoughts of a lush green lawn begin to take the top spot on the Honey-Do list.
Ronnie Stevens, owner of Clean Cut Lawn Care offers several tips to help as the grass wakes up for the summer:
1. Soil Test to check your pH and know what ammendments or nutrients to add.
2. Core Aeration is absolutely necessary for compacted, hard lawns.
3. Top Dress the lawn with compost to add organic material to the soil.
4. Do an Insecticide & Fungicide Application
5. Fertilizer and post-emergent if needed.
6. Mowing Your Lawn regularly, once a week or every other week.
When it comes to your mowing practices, Stevens shares these thoughts. “In my opinion, lawn height is more of a personal preference,” pointing out that different grass types like different heights. Stevens says that he typically mows lower early in the season, maybe 1.5 inches for centipede and zoysia and lower if you have bermuda grass. He says that as temperatures heat up, he lets the grass grow a little taller up to 2.5 inches, to help fight drought.
When it comes to watering, you want to give your lawn 1″ of water per week, whether by nature or using a sprinkler/irrigation system, according to Stevens.
