Free pet adoptions offered now through September 10th at Columbia Animal Services
COLUMBIA, SC (WOLO) — If you’ve been thinking of adopting a pet, now may be a good time to check out the furry friends at Columbia Animal Services.
Their annual event known as “Clear the Shelters” got underway on August 10th — offering free adoptions through September 10th.
Ten-month-old “Tweety” is one of around 130 adorable dogs and puppies — and over twenty cute cats and kittens that are available for adoption.
Animal Technician Brandon Fancy says this is the shelter’s 10-year-anniversary of the initiative, and they’re hoping to secure the most adoptions ever.
“We talk to you about what you’re looking for in your home, and we try to match you as best as possible with that, all you need is a valid I.D., be 18 years or older, and like I said, we’ve waived all adoption fees,” he says.
Care packages including a bag of food, measuring cup, and coupons will be included with your adoption through their ongoing Hill’s Program.
Before buying from breeders, pet stores, or puppy mills, Fancy hopes everyone will instead consider adopting.
“Oftentimes there’s a stigma with adopting from a shelter that these aren’t desirable animals. And I mean clearly these are some of the sweetest animals you’ll ever interact with. They have the sweetest hearts. And if only six percent of people who were looking to buy an animal decided to adopt, we’d completely end the killing of animals in the shelter,” he says.
Part of the event remains reminding pet owners who no longer want their animals, that the shelter is a last resort, and educating them on their Home-to-Home program.
“And that’s part of changing the minds of people to explain, the shelter is not just there whenever you can no longer take care of the animal. You’ve taken responsibility of the animal and so we want to continue that by helping you rehome, to find a good fit for your current pet if ownership is no longer something for you,” Fancy says.
