United Healthcare reduces number of prior authorizations by 30%

(CNN)– The largest heath insurer in the U.S. is reducing the number of prior authorizations by about a third.

United Healthcare will no longer require them for certain outpatient surgeries, echocardiograms and some chiropractic care.

Prior authorization is the industry’s jargon for when policy holders must get permission before a procedure to have it covered.

It’s been one of the most hated aspects of health insurance by policy holders and doctors alike.

There’s a growing movement in the industry to reduce them.
