Officers were called after 12:15 a.m. on Sunday, June 21 to a collision on Atlantic Avenue near Gates Street where a Jeep Grand Cherokee hit a moped.
Marcus J. McNeil, 36, of Sumter, was hit while driving the moped on Atlantic Avenue and died at the scene, say police.
An autopsy was scheduled.
An investigation by Sumter PD found the Jeep’s driver 29-year-old Jaquan J. Wells, also of Sumter, was crossing over to the opposite side of Atlantic Avenue to park when the two vehicles collided.
Wells, who was taken by a private vehicle to Prisma Health Tuomey for minor injuries, notified police of his location.
He was later placed in custody after officers determined there was evidence of impairment.
Wells was charged with felony driving under the influence resulting in death and booked at the county detention center.
Sumter PD says the investigation is ongoing.
