The filing period for candidates will open at noon on Tuesday, July 21, and close at noon on Tuesday, July 28.
A special Primary will be held on Tuesday, August 11, with a runoff, if necessary, held on Tuesday, August 25.
The nominee selected through this process will appear on the 2026 General Election ballot, says the South Carolina State Election Commission.
The special filing period is happening following the passing of Sen. Lindsey Graham who died over the weekend.
Senator Graham’s office confirmed his death early Sunday morning, July 12.
“South Carolina law establishes a clear process for filling a vacancy in a party nomination,” says Conway Belangia, SEC Executive Director. “Election officials are prepared to administer that process and will continue working with county election officials to provide voters with timely information throughout each step.”
