Pelion Police Chief reminds residents to close garage doors

PELION, S.C. (WOLO)– Pelion Police Chief Chris Garner says that an open garage door is an open invitation for criminals to help themselves to your property.
He also points out that an open garage gives criminals unlocked access to your living room.
“It takes a thief less than thirty seconds to walk into an open garage and steal high-value items like tools, lawn equipment, bicycles, or firearms,” the chief says.
Five Step Garage Safety List:
- Close it down: Never leave your garage door open unless you are actively working in your front yard.
- Lock the inside door: Keep the interior door connecting your garage to your house locked at all times.
- Hide the remote: Never leave a garage door opener inside a vehicle parked in your driveway.
- Secure your keys: Do not leave vehicle keys inside cars parked inside the garage.
- Set a timer: Consider installing a smart sensor that alerts your phone if the door stays open.
Police Chief Garner says creating a “Nine P.M. Routine” is another way to ensure the garage is secure.
“Make it a nightly habit at nine PM to walk your property, ensure doors and windows are secure, and also check your vehicles each night,” says Chief Carner.
