SC attorney general demands transparency from OpenAI after breach

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO)– Attorney General Alan Wilson says he is joining a coalition of 15 states demanding transparency from OpenAI.

Wilson is demanding transparency from the company following an artificial intelligence security breach that resulted in the hacking of another AI company called Hugging Face.

In July 2026, OpenAI released an experimental artificial intelligence model that gained unauthorized access to several computer networks which led to a days-long hack on another AI company.

OpenAI didn’t even realize the hacking occurred until the hacked company reported it to the FBI, according to Attorney General Alan Wilson.

The coalition states that OpenAI’s inability or unwillingness to ensure the safety of its product poses a serious risk for substantial harm across the country.

“A badly managed test allowed a powerful AI tool to hack another company’s network for days,” Attorney General Wilson stated. “The digital revolution has opened the door to an exciting new world for all of us, but those who operate these AI systems must ensure the highest level of oversight to protect the public and preserve their trust.”

Attorney General Wilson joined the letter along with the states of Iowa, Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Utah.
