Sumter PD: 1 arrested, searching for another following Monday shooting

SUMTER, S.C. (WOLO)– Sumter Police officers are looking for a driver and have charged a passenger following a fatal Monday shooting on East Charlotte Avenue.

Warrants were issued Tuesday, August 25, for Devontae Shykeem Bailey, 28, who last known address was on Maney Street.

Bailey was identified by police as the driver of a vehicle involved in the 11:45 a.m. Monday shooting in the Anne Park area of the city.

Officers responded to the shots fired call on East Charlotte Avenue when they found Leroy Bradford, 24, wounded, says Sumter PD.

Officers provided care until he was taken to Prisma Health Tuomey, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

Minutes after the shooting, a vehicle matching the one involved in the incident was spotted by an officer before it crashed into a pole on Andrena Drive.

Both the driver and passenger then ran after the crash, say police.

Malik Thomas, 19, was soon located and placed in custody.

He is charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime and was booked at the county detention center where he remains.

Efforts to locate Bailey and to determine what led to the shooting are ongoing, according to the police department.
