Advocates: Lowcountry bike route worth millions
CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Bicycling advocates say a 32-mile bike route through Charleston could pump $42 million into the local economy each year.
The Post and Courier reports (thttp://bit.ly/KkSILMe) supporters of the plan want the bike route to run from the Isle of Palms, through Mount Pleasant and Charleston and on to Folly Beach.
The idea has been discussed for two years but a new study by College of Charleston and Citadel researchers shows the impact the route could have on the economy.
Most of the $42 million would come from increased tourism, with the estimate based on a similar study of a bike route on the North Carolina Outer Banks.
