COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — “It was uncomfortable at times, you sort of had to say this is a little too much,” says Matt Tompkins, USC Political Science professor. Round two, President Obama and Governor Romney head to head, town hall style. This time President Obama was determined to show he was in it to win it. “It reassured President Obama supporters, sort of reassured Romney supporters and those in the middle were thinking, ‘my God,” says Tompkins. The debate, which was supposed to feature foreign and domestic policy, reverted back to the economy and a near mud slinging contest between the candidates. “The President had been told you have to look at Mitt Romney and Romney had been told you have to look at President Obama, so the dynamic was just inevitable,” says Tompkins. Crandall Sims reporting, “But what did you, the viewer, the voter think about last night’s debate? We hit the streets of Columbia to find out.” “It was kind of funny just to see how I guess, emotional the candidates got,” says one voter. “Obviously, Obama was trying to be a little more aggressive than he was the first debate so that showed and they did get into some tifs,” says another voter. And while voters acknowledge the obvious discord between the candidates, they weren’t exactly swayed. “I felt like they were going at each other a little more than actually discussing issues and that’s, like going at each other is not what’s important, it’s more about America,” says one voter. “As someone said last night, the two Alpha males going at it. It’s a little bit of a turnout for someone who is just looking for information,” says Tompkins. In the end, it’s a debate for the books, but it’s not the end. President Obama and Governor Romney will go head to head again next week in their final performance before you head to the polls. In the meantime, both sides are claiming a win for last night.
