SC Needs Rules After Putting Lieutenant Governor on Ticket

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Now that South Carolina voters have approved the governor and lieutenant governor running on the same ticket, lawmakers are working out the details.

A House subcommittee passed a bill Thursday that would have a gubernatorial candidate name a running mate after getting the party’s nomination.

Rep. Tommy Pope is the bill’s sponsor. He says there are also are arguments for having candidates for governor declare their ticket while running for the nomination so voters can consider both people.

But Pope thinks waiting until a candidate is nominated would allow the nominee to pick the best person, even if that person was running for the seat too.

The Republican from York plans to run for governor in 2018 in the first election with the new rules on lieutenant governor.
