Governor McMaster signs Kinship bill

COLUMBIA, SC (WOLO) —The South Carolina Department of Social Services estimates that 70 thousand children in the state are living with relatives or family friends.

Unlike Foster parents, kinship caregivers do not receive financial assistance but that will soon change.

South Carolina lawmakers passed S-380, a bill that provides federal assistance for kingship guardians this year.
Governor Henry McMaster held a ceremonial bill signing at the statehouse on Thursday, Nov. 9.

One man from Kershaw County who has been a Kingship caregiver spoke about his experience.

“Those with DSS say that children do better living with relatives or family friends than with a foster care family but stress that foster care parents are also still in need here in the Palmetto State,” said Kinship Caregiver Daryl Mcculley.
