Tyler’s Travels: Fort Jackson celebrates 107 years of creating Heroes
The Tyler's Travels Team spends the morning on Post to learn about what it takes to make soldiers
FORT JACKSON SC (WOLO) – Originally approved in 1917, “Camp Jackson” had the mission of becoming the premiere Army Training Center, and for the last 107 years, they have not only met that mission, but become the largest basic training facility in the world.
With a week of events planned to celebrate the history and the future of Fort Jackson, there are many ways to support the mission.
June 5
Fort Jackson is hosting an organizational fun day from 10 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. with food trucks, gaming trailers, displays, and music provided by the 282nd Army Band. Fort Jackson leadership will recognize the winners of the intramural sporting events and cut the cake for Fort Jackson’s 107th Birthday.
June 6
In commemoration of D-Day, the U.S. Army Basic Combat Training Museum on post will have re-enactors and artifacts on display from 1 – 3 p.m. focusing on engineering, small arms used by U.S. troops that day, and the Signal Corps’ role in photographing and filming the landing.
