A big day for a favorite cured meat

COLUMBIA SC (WOLO)–Bacon has been around since 1500 B.C., and over the years has become something of a food group, with American’s consuming over 1.7 billion pounds of the cured meat each year.  Over the last decade, bacon has really come into the spotlight, with entire restaurants dedicated solely to food and drinks inspired by, and containing, bacon.

Sara Krisnow from Lizard’s Thicket said that their chain of family restaurants goes through about 300 pounds of bacon daily, and nearly 10,000 pounds a month, illustrating the popularity of the food.  According to the website Bacon today, South Carolina is ranked number 8 for the top United States bacon markets.

The website also shares several bacon tidbits, including the fact that 11% of a standard pig weight is potential bacon.
