RCSD Sheriff Warns of Rise in Scams

RICHLAND COUNTY, S.C. (WOLO) – The Richland County Sheriff’s Department says it has received new reports of scams soliciting money for various fictitious scenarios costing unsuspecting victims to lose upwards of $6,000.
Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott offers these tips:
- Cancel your credit cards immediately.
- Write down the toll free numbers so you know whom to call; keep those where you can find them easily.
- Place the contents of your wallet on a photocopy machine, do both sides of each license, credit card, etc.
- File a police report immediately in the jurisdiction where it was lost or stolen
- Call the three national credit reporting organizations immediately to place a fraud alert on your name and Social Security number.

Social Security Administration (fraud line): 1-800-269-0271
