Group to hold vigil for geese chased from SLED lab
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — An animal rights group plans a vigil at the State Law Enforcement Division headquarters after the agency destroyed a goose nest with eggs inside.
SLED spokesman Thom Berry told The State newspaper (http://bit.ly/115922y ) that the geese were hissing, biting and flying at people trying to enter the agency’s lab.
The geese made a nest in a flower bed by the laboratory. SLED got permission to remove the nest and destroy the eggs about a week after the birds arrived.
Deloris Mungo wondered if SLED couldn’t have found a better solution. She says the geese weren’t dangerous to agents who carry guns and fight crimes.
The South Carolina Animal Welfare Advocacy group plans a memorial service for the eggs at the site of the former nest at 4:15 p.m. Sunday.
