SC Attorney General sues TikTok

Columbia, S.C. (WOLO)– Tuesday afternoon, SC Attorney General Alan Wilson announced he is joining a bi-partisan coalition of 14 attorneys general filing separate lawsuits against social media platform TikTok for violating state consumer protection laws.

“TikTok is knowingly addicting children to their platform and monetizing this behavior, all while deceiving parents about the safety of their business model,” said Attorney General Wilson.

The social media platform that allows users to post short-form videos on just about any topic imaginable has been the subject of scrutiny with US lawmakers calling for it to be banned due to its Chinese ownership and what they say is unfettered access to users personal data.

Representatives for TikTok say banning the platform would be a departure from the US’s traditional support for an open internet and set a dangerous precedent.
