State leaders encourage winter weather preparedness
COLUMBIA, SC (WOLO) — State leaders are stressing the importance of taking time now to prepare for any hazardous weather that may arise this winter.
“We typically expect severe weather here in South Carolina in January and February, but now’s the time we need to prepare for those events and today it’s unseasonably cold already here in South Carolina,” says Kim Stenson, Director of SCEMD.
To prepare for possible inclement weather in the coming weeks, leaders recommend installing weather stripping, insulating your water pipes, and allowing your faucets to drip during freezing temperatures to prevent pipes from bursting.
“And certainly learning how to shut off your water valves in case of a pipe burst,” adds Stenson.
Preparing your vehicle for winter weather is just as important.
“Before winter weather hits, thoroughly check your vehicle and pay close attention to the condition of your tires. Ensure your brakes are working properly, that you have adequate fluids and that all lights on your car are operational,” says Lieutenant Colonel Donald Banister with the SC Dept. of Public Safety.
Leaders say having a plan in place, and using it, is key.
“Ensuring that you protect what I often refer to as the four p’s. And that’s people, plants, pets, and pipes. And being able to have the supplies you need in stock, and listening and acting smartly and safely to information that is provided through emergency management channels,” says Major General Jeff Jones with the SC National Guard.
For help with a personalized plan for inclement weather, you can download SCEMD’s app on your mobile phone or go to their website here.
And when it comes to preparing for the holidays, Chief Jonathan Jones with SC State Fire reminds everyone to practice fire safety at all times.
“Never plug an extension cord into another extension cord. Instead plug extension cords directly into an outlet. Be careful not to overload electrical outlets and if you’re using a live Christmas tree, make sure to keep the tree from drying out by adding water everyday. Place your tree at least three feet away from any heat source,” he says.
