USC Professor: “No World War Over Syria.”
COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO/CNN) — “We’re talking about the use of chemical weapons against ones own citizens,” says Joel Samuels, Law Professor at USC.
Samuels is talking about the hundreds of people killed in Syria after the alleged use of chemical weapons.
“We have reached a point in our history, in our global history where we realize there are certain actions that simply cannot be taken,” says Samuels
But, the fact that Syria reportedly has chemical weapons could involved the United States.
“In 2002 when Americans were looking for weapons of massive destruction in Iraq, they should have found them in Syria, a lot of them,” says Josef Olmert, Political Science professor at USC.
Olmert says Iraq smuggled the weapons into Syria.
“At the time Saddam Hussein really believed that his only question of chemical weapons. I any of them, the UN, rather, monitors and observers find out he has no such weapons, there won’t be an American invasion,” says Olmert.
But that is all in the history books now. Today, people are reportedly dead because of alleged order given by their own leader.
“The overall balance in the civil war is against him regime,” says Olmert
But, Olmert says the alleged killings may also be revenge.
“Back on August 8th, there was an attempt on the life of President Assad in the Center of Demascus, he escaped it and some of his close people were killed,” says Olmert
Regardless of the reason, it’s look at by many as a heinous crime.
In fact, the only country that’s a permanent member of the UN’s Security Council that is standing with Syria, is Russia.
The debate here in America is, do we get involved and how?
Some worry about Syria’s threat to strike Israel if America uses military force.
“They say they will strike Israel, but again if I was their advisor I would say, don’t do that,” says Olmert
A decision on a possible military strike by the United States is expected this week.
Olmert says if a strike happens he does not believe a World War will break out.
