COMET unveils new hydrogen and electricity buses

RICHLAND COUNTY, S.C. (WOLO)– The COMET mass transit system is unveiling four new buses that run on hydrogen and electricity instead of diesel.

Coinciding with Tuesday, April 22, being “Earth Day,” leaders say the zero-emission buses will be cleaner, quieter, and more efficient.

Once hooked to its source, the hydrogen-ran buses can fully recharge in fifteen minutes, while the electric buses will only take about two hours to get back to 100%.

Funded by a nearly three million dollar grant from the FTA, the eco-friendly rides are expected to eliminate up to 135 tons of gas emissions per year.

The team at COMET will determine whether the hydrogen or electric buses better serve the community, and then replace older diesel powered ones overtime.
