COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO)– Attorney General Alan Wilson says he is demanding the City of Columbia remove its ban on a controversial form of therapy for minors.

Wilson says the city’s ban on faith-based counseling, also known as conversion therapy, conflicts with state law and violations of constitutional rights.

Conversion therapy is an attempt to change someone’s sexual orientation.

City of Columbia Mayor Daniel Rickenmann is questioning the timing of the request.

The U.S. Supreme Court will hear arguments over similar conversion therapy bans in 2026.

Currently 27 states and hundreds of municipalities have a ban on the practice.
