Protect your pipes: Tips from Columbia Water
COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) – With another few days of temperatures expected to drop below freezing overnight, Columbia Water said it’s reminding customers to take the necessary precautions to protect their pipes.
Inside your home, they say to leave your faucets dripping to keep water moving through the pipes, and open any under-sink cabinets to allow heat to circulate and keep pipes warm.
Outside, Columbia Water says to disconnect hoses or lines from your outside spigots, turn off outside spigots and cover them with blankets or insulated covers, which can be found at most hardware stores.
Frozen water in your pipes causes major problems, including interrupted service and line breaks, a spokesperson for Columbia Water said. One way to find a leak is to turn off all spigots then check to see if your water meter continues to run. If it is, Columbia Water says, you could have a leak.
