Irmo Police respond to claims by family of man who died in custody last month
IRMO, S.C. (WOLO)– The Irmo Police Department is responding to claims from the family of a man who died in custody last month.
His family met with the media and attorneys earlier this week asking for answers.
Irmo Police say on June 22, 45-year-old Byron Jackson was tased after fleeing from officers in a car then fighting with officers following a chase.
Police say shortly after being restrained, Jackson began having trouble breathing.
Police say EMS was informed of the possibility of a narcotics-related medical emergency after drug paraphernalia was found in his vehicle.
He was taken to the hospital and officers notified his mother.
Jackson suffered cardiac arrest heading to the hospital and died days later.
Police Chief Bobby Dale says the body cam and dash cam video is part of SLED’s investigation after the family’s attorney called for its release.
