COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — After a year of planning and raising funds, the First Responders Memorial project announces the unveiling ceremony on September 11, 2011, at 3:00pm. Two steal beams taken from the rubble of the Word Trade Center, Tower One, have been placed at the site of the memorial, located at Te Columbia Metropolitan Visitors Center. Two 25ft granite towers are scheduled to be placed soon and will bear the names of the 47 First Responders, from the Midlands, who have died in the line of duty since September 11, 2001. The $750,000 goal is much less than it was. Organizers say the outpouring of help and financial support from the Midlands has been wonderful; however, they are $22,000 from their goal. A fundraiser will be held near the Liberty Tap Room restaurant near Lincoln and Senate Streets in The Vista, downtown Columbia, from 12:00pm until 4:00pm on Saturday, September 10. More information may be obtained and donations made through the Memorial’s website www.SCRemembers911.com.
