DPH confirms measles cases continue to grow in Upstate outbreak

Scdph Increases South Carolina Measles Case Count

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO)– On Tuesday, Nov. 18, SCDPH has confirmed another 5 new cases of the measles in the Upstate, say officials.

According to the Dept. of Public Health, the 5 new cases which has been reported since Friday, makes it a total of 49 cases related to the Upstate.

The total number reported to DPH this year is 52.

Two of the five cases are household members of known measles cases who were in quarantine.

The other three are the result of as-yet unknown sources of transmission.

DPH says the initial investigation of contacts of the new cases has determined potential exposures in public settings.

There are now 84 people in quarantine, according to officials.

The unidentified sources of the three new cases emphasizes the risk of ongoing community transmission in South Carolina.

As travel for the upcoming holidays may increase, officials say there is risk of exposures for those traveling and for those accepting visitors.

To increase access to MMR vaccines, DPH has activated a Mobile Health Unit to deploy to the following location this week to offer MMR vaccine to unvaccinated individuals at no cost.

Vaccines are also available at many primary care provider offices and pharmacies, as well as DPH Health Departments.
