The South Carolina Supreme Court has confirmed the date it will hear oral arguments in Alex Murdaugh’s appeal of his double murder conviction.

The court will hear oral arguments in The State vs. Richard Alexander Murdaugh on Wednesday, Feb. 11 beginning at 9:30 a.m. The date was visible on the court’s roster of cases as far back as November, but it confirmed Tuesday additional key details about who and what will be allowed in the courtroom.

The session will be open to the public and seating will be first-come, first-served beginning at 8:30 a.m. Laptops and tablets are permitted but must not make noise, phones are permitted but must be turned off, and both still and video cameras are not allowed.

Murdaugh, disgraced former lawyer who was convicted of killing his wife and son in 2023, filed his appeal on Dec. 10, 2024. After a lengthy period in which prosecutors were granted additional time to respond, the South Carolina Attorney General’s Office eventually filed its response on Aug. 10, 2025.

Murdaugh’s defense team filed its final response a month later, setting the stage for the court to decide if one of the state’s most high-profile legal cases in recent history will produce a retrial.

Murdaugh’s team believes he deserves a retrial based in part due to alleged misconduct by former Colleton County Clerk of Court Becky Hill and the inclusion of his admitted financial crimes in the original trial. Hill pleaded guilty to charges including obstruction of justice, perjury, and misconduct in office back in December.

State prosecutors remain confident in their case.
