Demonstration shows support for Iranian protestors

COLUMBIA, SC (WOLO) — Iranian students, instructors, and community members gathered at the State House Saturday afternoon for what they say is a global day of action.

The day was meant to show solidarity for protestors in Iran who have faced repression and violence under the current Islamic regime. According to the U.S. based Human Rights Activist News Agency, over 6,400 protestors have been killed and over 51,500 people have been arrested.

“This has been happening for the past 47 years – as long as this Islamic regime has been in power. They started by killing thousands of people in the early 80,” says protestor Mostafa Mobli.

The peaceful demonstrations follow a call by Iran’s opposition leader and exile crowned prince Reza Pahlavi.

Pahlavi, the son of Iran’s former monarch Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, has recently drawn international attention after meetings with U.S. political leaders, including Senator Lindsey Graham, who publicly expressed support for the Iranian people.

Organizers emphasize that the demonstration will be peaceful and focused on amplifying the voices of Iranians inside the country.
