South Carolina baseball has a long tradition of excellence which includes 11 College World Series appearances as well as four national runner-up finishes, but it was the 2010 team, led by Coach Ray Tanner, which broke through to win its first national championship. Whit Merrifield’s RBI single to right field in the bottom of the 11th inning of game two of the championship series against UCLA scored Scott Wingo for the game-winning run to cap Carolina’s first title. After losing their opening game of the CWS to Oklahoma, the Gamecocks reeled off six consecutive wins, including two against rival Clemson, to win the title. Jackie Bradley, Jr. was the CWS Most Outstanding Player. It marked the final game at historic Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha which had been the home of the CWS for 61 years.

The 2011 Gamecocks christened TD Ameritrade Park, the new home of the College World Series, by sweeping the Florida Gators in the championship series. South Carolina went 10-0 in the postseason that year and set a national record of 16 straight NCAA Tournament wins dating back to the previous season. Scott Wingo took home Most Outstanding Player honors for the Gamecocks on the way to their second straight title.

Steve Spurrier is South Carolina’s winningest football coach in program history, posting an 86-49 record (.637) in his 11 seasons leading the program. He not only led the Gamecocks to their first 11-win season, but he did it three times in 2011, 2012, and 2013. South Carolina finished the year ranked in the top 10 in each of those three seasons. Spurrier also guided the Gamecocks to their first SEC Championship Game appearance in 2010 after winning the Eastern Division that season. He was named SEC Coach of the Year in 2005 and 2010 and was later given the Order of the Palmetto, the state’s highest civilian honor, by Governor Nikki Haley, for his extraordinary lifetime achievements and service to the state.

As a senior, she led the Gamecocks to a 32-1 overall record and final #1 national ranking, but the NCAA Tournament was canceled due to the COVID pandemic. Harris scored 1,340 points and is the only player in school history with more than 1,000 points and 700 assists. She finished her career as the program’s all-time assist leader (702), while also ranking #1 in assist to turnover ratio. She ranks second in career free throw percentage (.792) and minutes played, fifth in career starts, third in career assist average (5.1 apg), tenth in career steals (224), and holds the single season record with 220 assists. In 2020 she earned WBCA All-America, first team All-SEC, and SEC Athlete of the Year (all sports) honors. She was two-time WBCA honorable mention All-America and second team All-SEC honoree (2018, 2019) and earned a spot on the 2017 SEC All-Freshman team. She set the school record with 17 goals in 2017 (a record broken in 2024 by Cat Barry), and her 11 assists that year are tied for the third most in a single season. She ranks fourth in school history with 40 career goals and second with 34 career assists. She is also fourth in career points and second in career game-winning goals. McCaskill was the second overall pick in the 2018 NWSL draft and had her South Carolina jersey retired last fall.
