Derek Sumter has been charged with four counts of unlawful conduct towards a child.

Columbia Police officers and investigators were dispatched to a hospital on the morning of June 21, after medical staff pronounced a two-month-old baby deceased.

A joint investigation with the Richland County Coroner’s Office and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division revealed the child had recently sustained multiple injuries that resulted in his death, said CPD.

Investigators also found the state of the home to be unsuitable living conditions for all of the other minor children living in the home.

Both are currently being held at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.
