U.S. Rep. James Clyburn receives special honor from SC State

COLUMBIA, SC (WOLO) — South Carolina State University (SC State) held a ceremony Wednesday to dedicate the newly renamed James E. Clyburn Engineering and Computer Science Complex.
Representative Clyburn joined SC State officials for the dedication which celebrated the unveiling of the building’s new name. According to university officials, the renaming is to honor the alumnus for helping to secure millions of dollars in federal investments for SC State.
“He has always supported South Carolina State University and other HBCUs across the country. This past year, Congressman Clyburn delivered $45 million to South Carolina State University,” SC State President Alexander Conyers said.
Clyburn told the crowd SC State was the only college he applied to after graduating high school.
“I love this institution. I don’t know what made me do that, but I know what happened to me as a result of having done that. I love this institution with the kind of passion that I cannot explain. I love the ground I’m standing on. I’m not unfamiliar with this ground,” Clyburn said.
The engineering and computer science complex opened in 2012 and houses the only nuclear engineering program at any HBCU in the country. It also houses one of only 13 NuScale nuclear reactor control simulators in the country and the only one at an HBCU.
