Sumter woman charged with arson after setting home ablaze

SUMTER COUNTY, S.C. (WOLO)– A Sumter woman has been arrested and charged with arson after allegedly setting fire to the home where she lived, says SCSO.

Deputies with the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office responded Saturday afternoon, September 19, to a report of a fire at a home on Race Track Road.

When deputies arrived to the scene, they saw a home fully engulfed by fire.

The suspect who was identified as Patricia Anne Tilton is said to have asked victims to call 911.

Victims then heard windows breaking and saw smoke coming from a room she had left, states the sheriff’s office.

During questioning, deputies say Tilton was found to be in possession of a torch lighter, which she claimed to have used to start the fire during a domestic dispute.

Tilton was taken to the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center where she remains in custody.

The investigation into this fire is ongoing.
